Round Gelli Plate Fun 5

I was only going to make a few prints and a dozen or more later I had to make myself stop.  I just love them. I don't know what it is about them and you probably think I'm weird but I love them and I love making them.  I love choosing the colours , the surprise I get when I pullup the paper and see how the print turned out and I love the texture the scrunched up paper makes.

And here's where I went a little crazy...

Now I need to package them up ready for sale next weekend at Myattsfield Vineyard, Union Road, Carmel from 10am - 5pm. I've been busy some making more business cards to include in the packaging and to give to people too.

I had some leftover scrappy bits which I've turned into a collage which I'll show later in the week when it's finished.

I also tried out a new technique called Torn Gelli Plate by Barbara Gray of Clarity Stamp:

I'm also working on something new which I'll show you when it's ready - hopefully before the art sale next weekend.

Gelli Printing Over Collage

After watching the latest Gelli Arts video on Gelli Printing Faux Chine Colle I decided to give it a try.

The idea is to collage thin papers onto a thick backing paper and then to gelli print over the top.  This is a great way to use thinner papers which like to stick to the gelli plate and for some reason (not enough glue or paint) one of mine did but I carefully got it off the plate and glued it back down and being a collage it's not easy to see where.

I decided to follow the instructions on the video and the colours too but I think my greaseproof paper sucked up too much paint and didn't leave me enough to print with but has still left me with an interesting print.

The glue you use will leave texture on the paper so just be aware of that. Creating more texture on the gelli plate before printing is a good idea if you want to avoid seeing glue brushstrokes - this is not something that I did but next time I try this I will remember to do it and will use my scrunched up paper technique.

Mixed media girls update:  I have decided to display and sell some of the girls I created in February for 28 Faces at the Art Sale at Myattsfield Vineyard for the Bickley Harvest  on 3rd and 4th May.  I have gelli printed some of their backgrounds - this is much easier to do before you dress the girls.

Round Gelli Plate Fun 4

If you have two plates then have them both going at the same time and roll the excess paint from your brayer on to the other plate - it will dry but that doesn't matter nor does several layers of paint - end with a wet layer of paint and the print will pick up most of the other layers too.

I love to use scrunched up paper to create texture on the plate and a member of the Gelatin Printing Enthusiasts Group said they look like cells under the microscope or a petri dish.

Microscopic Cells Series....

My round gelli plate has a cut in it and I'm not sure how it got there. :(

Beverley - Gelli Print Girl Framed

Beverley has been framed and sent to the Beverley Art Exhibition in Beverley over the Easter weekend.

She is now my new avatar so I won't be sad if she doesn't sell, I'll be happy to have her come home.

She was created on watercolour paper with watercolour crayons for the face, then I gelli plate printed the background.  This required 6 seamless prints, no overlapping and for me to work fast so the paint didn't dry out - so I chose one colour teal for this. (I've bought the large gelli plate to help overcome this problem.) I created some gelli prints to use for the Akubra Hat and blouse and cut them out and collaged them on. I decided the background needed more colour so I put a blue watercolour wash over it. Then I used acrylic paint for the hair - a braid/plait - a new style for me but suited my outback jillaroo.  I had butterflies swarming my stomach when I took her to the framers but they were very nice and we picked out a frame that was wooden and slightly textured but not too fussy.

Beverley was the first gelli print girl I've had framed which is a big thing for me to be able to say that my art is worthy of framing and of sending to an exhibition - sometimes we just have to put our brave girl boots on and go for it.  There are many artists out there who create girls but this is how I like to create mine - with a less fussy background so the gelli print clothes get to stand out - and it's how it's been for a few years now since I started to creating girls.

Gelli Print Rock Stacks

After I saw this video by Jane Davies - Gel Plate Shapes - I was so inspired I just had to try this for myself.

I cut out the shapes out of old cereal boxes and used more earthy colours - Micaceous Iron Oxide, which is a sparkly grey colour, raw umber, burnt sienna, paynes grey, transparent iron oxide, quinacridone nickel azo gold and phalo turquoise to name a few.  A different colour palette to my usual one.

The painting above I printed onto watercolour paper so I could use watercolour paints for the background. The prints below are on art journal paper.  I used scrunched up deli/tissue/greaseproof paper and saran/cling/glad wrap to create the textures.

I really love how some of these rocks turned out.

And here's me in Scotland last August building a rock stack....

DLP and Journal 52

I did some quick art journaling this afternoon:

Documented Life Project - Week 14 - Write your name and embellish it.

Gelli print with glued on letters....

Journal 52 - Week 13: How Does Your Garden Grow?

Gelli print, Sharpie pen because my paint pens won't work, gelli print flowers.

Oh dear, I can tell how tired I am as I could have added a lot more details and embellishments to these, oh well, at least I have done them this week.

How's your art journaling going?
