Goodbye BlogtoberFest 2014

WooHoo!!!

Yay, today is the last day of BlogtoberFest 2014!!  We made it!  How did you go?

Many thanks to everyone who participated over the past 31 days, it has been great fun and I really enjoyed hosting it - many thanks to {tinniegirl} for allowing me to host this year..  Thank you all so much for taking time to read my posts and your comments, it's always a challenge  - trying to find something to blog about, getting photos organised - and it always takes much longer than what I think and what it should take. So give yourself a pat on the back.

I hope to catch up with you again sometime during the next 11 months.  I'm not sure about BlogtoberFest 2015 - please check in with the originator of BlogtoberFest {tinniegirl} for more details.

Many thanks again.

Take care and stay safe and stay tuned.

Pink Accordion Gelli Print Book

BlogtoberFest 2014 - Day 30 - Creating something Pink

As part of a swap I had to create something pink with a pink ribbon for Breast Cancer Awareness month in October.  I created this pink accordion gelli print book and have decided to leave some blank space for the recipient to decorate or journal in....and I'm not sure what else to do with it, what words to stamp in it, etc....

I am a two faced woman...one face is my vintage side and I love to create in this style, and my other face is my graffiti lovin’, messy, colorful side and I love creating in this style too.  Shabby Cottage Studio is my personal blog where I share the small things of my creative life and also the name of my Etsy store.  I also own Creative Workshops where we host a variety of artists teaching online classes.

Gelli Print Blog Hop and Giveaway

BlogtoberFest 2014 - Day 15 - Gelli Print Blog Hop with a tutorial and a giveaway!

Today I'm starting off the Gelli Print Blog Hop with a how I made this tutorial of this Flower Power mixed media painting.

Flower Power, Mixed Media on Cardstock, 20cm x30cm, 8" x 12"

Supply List - cardstock, gelli prints (you could use scrapbooking papers), paper cutter/scissors, gel medium and acrylic paints.

1. I created some gelli prints using red, orange, yellow and pink acrylic paints and a variety of textures.

2. I cut them into a variety of different sized rectangles and squares and collaged them onto cardstock using gel medium, starting from the middle. Coat the collage in a thin layer of gel medium.

3. When finished I trimmed down the edges.

4. I then used white acrylic paint to outline the flowers.

5. Next, I painted in between the flowers with an opaque colour to blockout the background - I used turquoise and white.

6. Repaint the white lines as they may have turquoise paint on them and this will make them crisper.

Here is the second one I made -

I tore the gelli prints into strips before gluing them down, I then made a glaze by mixing a little of a transparent paint with a lot of gel medium - a few drops of paint to about a teaspoon of medium, paint over all of your collage.

GIVEAWAY!!! Yes!!!  I'm going to be giving away the first mixed media Flower Power painting.

All you have to do is leave a comment on my blog from today until 3pm Perth time/3am New York time on 23rd October when I will choose and announce the winner. It's as easy as that.

Here's the list of all the Gelli Print Blog Hoppers for you to visit over the next week - check out their beautiful artwork and look for some more giveaways:

Have fun!!

PS Do you love creating gelli prints?  Want a place to discuss gelli printing?  To show off your work?  Share your ideas? Discuss the pros and cons of different paints/paper/plates/tools etc?  Get some great ideas on what to do with the thousands of prints you have created?

Van Gogh's Postman

BlogtoberFest 2014 - Day 14 - Van Gogh's Postman

Today I managed to work more on the ecourse I'm taking - Jeanne Oliver's Studying Under The Masters - Portraits and Self Portraits. I have painted Van Gogh's Postman (Portrait of the Postman Joseph Roulin, April 1888) in acrylics and found it very challenging but a lot of fun.  It was difficult to do without knowledge of the colours he used and I found it hard to get my brushes to show distinct lines/patterns.....

Here's the evolution pic:

Prior to this I created this Frida painting to practice faces - I used graphite pencil and gesso.  For the postman I found some charcoal which works better.

Tomorrow is the start of the Gelli Print Blog Hop and I'm having a giveaway - so pop back them and check it out!

Gelli Printed Denim Journal Cover

BlogtoberFest 2014 - Day 10 - gelli printing onto denim.

Today I gelli printed onto some journal covers I made from an old denim skirt. There was just so much yummy denim there I had to use it and not give it away. You could use an old pair of jeans legs.

I used normal acrylic paints as that is what I had and I didn't want to spend any more money on paint and I know that paint doesn't wash out of my clothes, not that I was planning on washing the journal covers.

You can see the results above and close ups below.  The denim soaks up the paint so I had to be more generous on the plate. I may have got a better result using fabric paint or a fabric medium in the paint but I can still decorate them further.

First try - I used a flower stencil I made recently.

Second journal cover:

Third journal cover - I used a darker red paint...

Here's my journal that I made - there are weekly pages, pages for writing on and pages for arting/doodling on. A 3 in 1 Diary/Journal/Planner

Would you like more details on how I made this journal?  Please leave a comment below, if I get enough interest then I will get onto it straight away so you can get it ready for next year.

Next week I'm looking forward to the Gelli Print Blog Hop and I'm having a giveaway - very excited to create for it this weekend.

PS Do you love creating gelli prints?  Want a place to discuss gelli printing?  To show off your work?  Share your ideas? Discuss the pros and cons of different paints/paper/plates/tools etc?  Get some great ideas on what to do with the thousands of prints you have created?

Warm Roasted Vegetable Salad for Dinner

BlogtoberFest 2014 - Day 9 -Dinner tonight...

Tonight I am making a Warm Roasted Vegetable Salad and Roast chicken for dinner.  My son and his girlfriend are visiting and she is gluten free and vegetarian and she enjoys the roast vege salad, and my son enjoys the meat and roast chicken is one of my favourite dishes.

Here's the recipe and I have based it on this one:

Roast vegetable of your choice - potatoes, sweet potato, red onion, red capsicum, roma tomatoes, carrots and pumpkin. Roast for about an hour.

Spinach
Avocado
Chick Peas
Diced Beetroot

Dressing - olive oil, lemon juice, french mustard and chopped garlic.

For dessert I have bought some meringue nests and will add whipped cream and strawberries.   mmmmm....

I must remember to take pics before I eat it all....

My son made gluten-free baked cheesecake - he's a champion!
