Visit Laney - Blog Hop Around the World

Last week I participated in the Blog Hop Around the World and Laney McDonald from Sugarplum Patchwork so graciously volunteered to carry it on...

Laney McDonald's Art Tags

Laney McDonald from Sugarplum Patchwork - Hello there and welcome! My name is Laney. I'm an artist with a love for bright, happy colors. I've always loved everything creative - sewing, embroidery, drawing, stained glass, painting, collage and on and on. I was even a ballet dancer many moons ago. I still love a myriad of creative activities. Sometimes I stitch, sometimes I paint or draw. I believe creative expression is good for the soul. Here you'll find me writing about what I'm creating, what I'm thinking and what inspires me. I hope you'll be inspired too.

Please go check out her great blog post and if you would like to join in with the blog hop then that would be awesome - you need to answer the 4 questions and find others to carry on the hop too.
Thank you.

Blog Hop Around the World

I was invited by Phillippa Montier to take part in a blog hop.  I first met Pip when she joined the Gelatin Printing Enthusiasts FaceBook group and shared her beautiful gelli prints with us and was thrilled when she joined in on the Gelli Print Blog Hop.

What am I working on?

At the moment I'm working on some items to sell at the Klatchapalooza Market - it's a pop-up online market over the last weekend in November - great way to get some original art for gifts.

Here's a sneak peek...there will be 8 inch square slimline canvases with gelli prints on them and I've altered some of them ...

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I love to create monoprints on the gelli plate and each one is unique and different. I also create my own stencils to help with uniqueness.

When I create my girls I use the gelli prints for their clothes and hats and I print the backgrounds too.

Here is my lantern stencil - I do a drawing first, then cut it out from acetate and then get out the gelli plate and have fun.

How do I create what I do?

I either have a plan or I don't. So I will create gelli prints just for fun, to experiment or with an idea/colour/texture in mind.

If I'm creating one of my girls then I have a plan and will create some gelli prints esp for her.  Otherwise I look at a gelli print and let it 'talk' to me or I just collage some prints and see where it takes.

Here is Alice - The Mad Hatter

How does my creating process work?

I like to browse Pinterest for inspiration. For my gelli print girls I look for different hats or headwear. I also do some art journaling and mixed media on different substrates such as index cards or manilla folders. Sometimes I copy something that I see then I get ideas on how to alter it and so will go on to create more of the one thing but they are all different - I think about changing size, shape, colour, background.

For example - my Mantra Mobiles - I saw a quote on Pinterest by Matisse and wanted to create a piece that I could look at every day to remind me.  So I created the first Mantra Mobile and then thought I would find another quote and make another etc differing the background shapes and colours etc.

Many thanks to Pip for inviting me to join in with blog hop.

Here are the next blog-hoppers who will be posting next Monday, head over to these amazing blogs for more blog-hopping fun!

Gelli Print Blog Hop and Giveaway

BlogtoberFest 2014 - Day 15 - Gelli Print Blog Hop with a tutorial and a giveaway!

Today I'm starting off the Gelli Print Blog Hop with a how I made this tutorial of this Flower Power mixed media painting.

Flower Power, Mixed Media on Cardstock, 20cm x30cm, 8" x 12"

Supply List - cardstock, gelli prints (you could use scrapbooking papers), paper cutter/scissors, gel medium and acrylic paints.

1. I created some gelli prints using red, orange, yellow and pink acrylic paints and a variety of textures.

2. I cut them into a variety of different sized rectangles and squares and collaged them onto cardstock using gel medium, starting from the middle. Coat the collage in a thin layer of gel medium.

3. When finished I trimmed down the edges.

4. I then used white acrylic paint to outline the flowers.

5. Next, I painted in between the flowers with an opaque colour to blockout the background - I used turquoise and white.

6. Repaint the white lines as they may have turquoise paint on them and this will make them crisper.

Here is the second one I made -

I tore the gelli prints into strips before gluing them down, I then made a glaze by mixing a little of a transparent paint with a lot of gel medium - a few drops of paint to about a teaspoon of medium, paint over all of your collage.

GIVEAWAY!!! Yes!!!  I'm going to be giving away the first mixed media Flower Power painting.

All you have to do is leave a comment on my blog from today until 3pm Perth time/3am New York time on 23rd October when I will choose and announce the winner. It's as easy as that.

Here's the list of all the Gelli Print Blog Hoppers for you to visit over the next week - check out their beautiful artwork and look for some more giveaways:

Alice - The Mad Hatter

For the Blog Hop Club our July theme is Faces.

Guada describes it just how I feel too - "For me painting faces it´s just the perfect mix between paradise and challenge ♥ it took me some time to achieve portraits I like and I´m still far away from being where I want to be but I enjoy the process so so much!"

I found a picture on Pinterest to inspire my hat for my girl - it's a Mad Hatter hat so that is why I've named her Alice - the Mad Hatter.

Here is the link to my Steller eBook with evolution pics.

Materials I used:

Watercolour paper
Graphite Pencils
Tracing paper
Scissors
Caran D'Ache Neocolor II
Gelli prints - phalo blue, turquiose green, alizarin crimson, purple, white.
Gel medium
Acrylic paints - gold, burnt sienna, yellow ochre, white and black.

Here are my evolution and how to photos:

1. I drew my face with hat and clothes.
2. Traced around my face, hat and clothes.
3. Traced around my face.

4. Coloured in my face with the Caran D'Ache Neocolor II watercolour crayons.

5. I cut out the face and neck area from the tracing paper and covered the face with it using Blu-Tac to hold it down. Use the paper as a mask from the paint.
6. I applied paint to my gelli plate, phalo blue, and then put some scrunched up paper on for texture.
7. Then I placed my girl onto the gelli plate - scary moment.
8. Then I tore my paper taking it off the plate!!!  Aargh!!! So do this step carefully and straight away - no taking photos of a piece of paper on your gelli plate.

9/10. Our secondary theme for this month was the following colours - blue green and red violet - so I created some gelli prints using these colours for the hat and clothes.
11/12. Cut out the hat and clothes from the tracing paper to use as a template and place in the best postion on the print. Trace around with a pencil then cut them out.

13. Use the gel medium to glue the gelli prints onto the girl.
14. I used gold paint to outline the hat and give it a ribbon edge.  I also found the background colour too dark, especially on the left of the painting and this helped to differentiate between the background and the hat.  I should have used a light blue for the background to make the hat stand out.  I did add a wash of yellow to fill in the white and give the background a green tinge.
15. I painted in the hair - always a scary moment for me too.

There you go, that's how I do my girls....She is for sale along with 3 of my other girls as part of an Art Sale for Nicole's Cause - $50 will go to the cause and $10 will cover postage. Bargain!!

Now for the heart pendant giveaway - please leave a comment below and I will choose a winner next Thursday.

There are more chances to win amazing prizes - to enter you need to visit and comment on the following artists' blogs on the scheduled days:
I look forward to the Blog Hop Club next month - I wonder what the theme will be?
