30TH AUGUST 2018 CULLODEN TO INVERURIE VIA THE CAIRNGORMS

Lecht Mine, Corgarff Castle, Glenbuchat Castle, Kildrummy Castle and Leith Hall, Scotland

We drove though the Cairngorms and I saw this building and we had to stop for a good photograph and to have a look. It was the Lecht Mine ruins - it was an iron ore (1730-1737) and manganese mine (1840-1846) and today only the crushing plant building survives. Photo top left is house nearby.

Corgarff Castle was built and burned down in the 16th century. From Wiki: "After the Jacobite risings of the 18th century, it was rebuilt as a barracks and a detachment of government troops were stationed there, on the military road from Braemar Castle to Fort George, Inverness. Military use continued as late as 1831, after which the tower served as a distillery and housed local workers."

Continuing along our drive we came upon Glenbuchat Castle ruins. It was built in 1590.

Driving to Inverurie we saw the Picardy Symbol Stone which is a burial marker (top left photo) and stopped to see the Maidenstone in Inverurie which is a Pictish standing stone made of red granite standing 3m tall.
