Last week I received the book Daring Adventures in Paint by Mati Rose McDonough and have been working on my first painting using some of the techniques in the book.
The Birdhouse, Mixed Media using recycled cardboard as the substrate (which has a great effect), acrylic paints, scrapbooking papers, graphite pencil and paint pen.
I really loved the layout of the book where each technique had it's own chapter and some had their own piece of artwork to create. At the end of the book Mati Rose showed how she used all the techniques to create one painting so you will learn how to create a mixed media painting from beginning to end.
I agree with the philosophy of using your own face for girly portraits and in this book Mati Rose encourages us to look at our environment and to delve into our childhood for ideas to use in our artwork. This encourages not only uniqueness in our work but you will also find that others can relate to our story and/or they enjoy seeing our story.
For more info and pics about the book then check out Jessica Swift's Blog post.
This is a great book for beginners, for those interested in mixed media and one that I wish I had a couple of years ago.

Wednesday Workshop
Have just been to my Wednesday mixed media workshop with Neil Elliott and I worked some more on last week's Streetscape 3 and started Streetscape 4.
We all stood around oooing and aahing at Liz's painting - she's on the left.
This is Liz And Neil with the same painting a few weeks ago.
My order of cool colours of Golden paints arrived on Monday so played with them on watercolour paper and on Tuesday I rolled on another layer of warm colours then turned them into bookmarks by stamping them and cutting them out and will then laminate them and punch a hole in them and add a tassel...make great gifts...
Hope you are having a great arty week.

Shell's Sunday Snippets
My week in pics...
My latest painting I created at my Wednesday Workshop - I really like it - do you?
Or do you find it too simplistic?
Does the house need windows and doors?
Does the tree need some of my confetti tree dots?
I hurt my back yesterday lifting a too full wood basket - I really should have known better....so I'm not too sure what this week will look like...a few trips to the chiropractor I imagine - I have a great chiro but he's nearly an hour away....
Hope you are having a great weekend and join in with {tinniegirl} and play along with {sunday snippets} A collection of photos from your week. No need for words. Let the pictures tell your story.

Picasso to Warhol
Today I went to the Art Gallery of Western Australia with my BFF SandyPants and my son to see the Picasso to Warhol 14 Modern Masters exhibition. It was awesome to see their work up close and to discuss the paintings and sculptures afterwards, and to contemplate the influence they have had on my artwork.
It was interesting to see the evolution of Picasso's work.
Matisse's art:
Fernand Leger - I would love to take this painting and make it my own - repaint it in my style:
Just as Miro did with this painting:
Based on this painting:
Jackson Pollock - what a lot of fun he had expressing his emotions - not illustrating them...
Romare Bearden's collage:
I loved the colours in this Map by Jasper Johns:
Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans were interesting to see close up, all individually made, pencil lines still showing and all slightly different...
At the end of the exhibition there are postcards to fill out - Dear Picasso, Dear Andy - and they have displayed some from children mostly. I took a postcard to fill out at home and will pop it in the box when I return with Neil Elliot and the ladies from Wednesday's Workshop.
If you ever get a chance to visit an art gallery esp with such famous works in it then do go. I didn't like all the artwork that I saw today but I can appreciate and learn from viewing them.
